The English Martial Arts Academy is going on tour!
We are taking our ever popular "Introduction to English Martial Arts" course on tour around the UK. We will be putting on a series of one day seminars at venues around the country in order to give people the chance to try their hand at English Martial Arts and see what all the fuss is about.
Within only a few days of announcing the tour we were contacted by BBC Wiltshire to do a feature on their breakfast show. They, like so many other people, had never heard of English Martial Arts and were amazed to find out all about us. You can hear part of the feature here Their Sports Rreporter Ben Moss will be attending one of the first sessions to do a follow up feature. You never know, if you come along you might end up on the BBC!
The session will begin with a brief introduction before heading into a fast and furious look at the pugilistic arts of the prize fighters of old. Follow in the footsteps of such greats as Jimmy Figg, Daniel Mendoza and John "Gentleman" Jackson as you learn how to punch hard, how to punch the way professional bare knuckle boxers punched. How to protect your hands and how to develop power in your strikes without making yourself more vulnerable to counters.
After a short break we will be straight back to the action looking at traditional grappling techniques and how to incorporate them along with the striking arts of the pugilists of old. The arm locks and throws of Sir Thomas Parkyns, the leg sweeps and kicks of Abraham Cann will all find their place in your repertoire as you delve into the combative arts studied by the great Englishmen of old.
A break for lunch follows, before the first of the afternoon sessions begins. A brief look at footwork will be followed by an indepth look at the techniques of the English Basket Hilted sword as described by George Silver. It was Silver who first codified the system of combat taught by the English Martial Arts Academy. His system teaches us the simplest and safest way to defeat our opponent in the most effective and efficient manner. If time permits we will look at how to enhance the skills you have learnt with the addition of a secondary weapon in the left hand.
The day will close after a short cool down and a question and answer session.
All necessary equipment will be provided by the English Martial Arts Academy, all you need to bring is your enthusiasm! Your day will be full and you will need to be fairly active, but don't worry if you aren't that fit or you've never done martial arts before you will be absolutely fine. EMAA students range from age 14 to 84 and cover a whole range of fitness. If however you are an experienced martial artist we promise you you'll learn something new. If you don't we'll give you your money back.
As ever we are keen to develop links with other groups and other styles of Martial Arts. If you are an instructor or group leader the why not get in touch. We're happy to offer club discounts for our special events and we'd love to talk about running study days that involve other arts. We pay our Instructors a very competetive rate.
Keep training, enjoy the sun, and don't eat too much BBQ food.
I hope to see you soon.
Martin
